There is no debate in saying that the absurd dowry system has been responsible for destroying families in Pakistan. This dreadful and unethical tradition has continued to prevail in our society for a long long period of time and is a regressive practice that undermines the status of women in society. The irony is that it is not something that only illiterate people adhere to but some highly educated people are also involved in this social evil.
Dowry culture is a route to many evils. The elite class and rich people are more responsible for this tradition because they give extravagant luxuries to their daughters that a poor man cannot afford. This is one reason why low-income families see their daughters as a burden and would do anything to cover this absurd and unjustified wedding expenditure. Moreover, the lack of sufficient dowry serves as the catalyst for crimes, domestic violence and is a cause of mental torture as well.
KPK Government Gets Appreciation
While many civil rights movements have tried to take initiatives against this norm and there have been restrictions brought in place to control this unreasonable wedding expense that is responsible for destroying lives. In Pakhtun society, dowry perpetuates as “walwar”, an amount paid by the groom to the bride’s family in return for her hand.
Taking an applaudable initiative, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has unanimously passed a landmark legislation restricting bride’s family members, relatives, and outsiders from making any sort of dowry payments to the groom and his family in any way.
The law titled, ‘the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dowry, Bridal Gift, and Marriage Functions Restriction Act, 2017,’ states that It is now illegal for anyone from the groom’s family or anyone on their behalf to demand dowry. If they persist, they can face a two-month prison term and a fine of Rs300,000 or both. This initiative has received high appreciation from the people of KPK, and other people of other provinces are also demanding such laws to be placed in practice.
